What goobyes are made of (Part 2)

Have you ever met the right person at the wrong time?
Or the wrong person at the right time?
That’s why they say timing is important.
He met the right person at the right place.
            But the timing.
It was just wrong from the beginning.

They were like two lines that were travelling in opposite directions in the space-time continuum. Their lives just happened to intersect at a certain point along their journey. But the sad part was that there was only one such point of encounter. Later on, they would continue to move away from each other, growing further apart and never to meet again.
If you know that there’ll be no happy ending, would you still fall in love with someone?
He knew there would be no happy ending but he still fell in love with her.
            He was brave.
            He was a fool.
            He was a brave fool.

The days they had together were numbered. The final goodbye was inevitable. He knew he shouldn’t get too attached. But his stupid heart with its stupid feelings latched onto her like a fish caught on a hook.
The moments were like cancerous cells. They kept on multiplying, growing stronger and breaking down his defences. He didn’t stand a chance. And of course, everyone knows there’s no cure for cancer.
He remembered that day when she got all serious after she had been laughing at something funny he said. She looked at him straight in the eyes and said, “Are you falling in love with me?” His face burned and his eyes widened like a thief caught in the act. She was known for coming up with shockingly honest and blunt statements. But this time, it really startled him. Whether because it came out of the blue or because it was true, he didn’t know. And before he even had  a chance to answer, she went on to say, “Don’t fall in love with me. Just.. Don’t. OK?” He laughed it off and told her she’s so full of herself. He went on to tease her about how she’s going to end up all alone in an apartment with a hundred cats. She laughed but her eyes were a dull shade of pity and sadness.
He loved her for all that she did and all that she didn’t. He loved her for the way she made him happy and he loved her even when she didn’t love him back.
On the final morning, he went to her room. She told him she would not see him off because she didn’t like saying goodbye. He said he understood. He left a box full of memories in front of her door. He wanted her to have something to remember him by after he had gone. Then, with one final glance at the name hanging in front of the door, he turned and left.
Later, when she opened the box, she wouldn’t find it.
But he’s sure he left a piece of his heart in that box.

Sometimes, goodbyes are made of words that were left unsaid.
