Memographs

“Grandpa, you don’t have many photographs with Grandma, do you?”
He smiled fondly at the little girl who reminds him so much of his late wife.
“Ah, yes. We didn’t get many chances to take photographs. But I’ll tell you one thing. I have lots of memographs with her.”
Confused, the little girl asked, “Memograph? What exactly is a memograph?”
“Well, my dear, a memograph is....”

Flashback

That day, they went to the beach.
“It’s all so beautiful!” She ran towards the waves like a child who was seeing the ocean for the first time.
“Yeah, isn’t it? Pity we don’t have a camera to capture all of this.”
At that, she chuckled lightly and said, “No, silly. You have the best camera in the world with you and you don’t even realize it.” Seeing his puzzled expression, she made her way towards him and covered his eyes with her hands.
            “Hey, what’re you doing?”
“Shh.... I’m gonna show you how to use your camera.”
She uncovered his eyes and stood beside him. “Look. Look at the clear sky and the blue ocean. Look at how the waves sparkle under the morning sun. Oh and do you see those kids building sandcastles happily over there? Take it all in. Now, close your eyes.” He gave her a skeptical look but she was so enthusiastic about the whole thing that he decided to indulge her. He did as he was told.
“Ok, good. Now listen to the waves beating lazily against the shore. Feel your toes dipping into the soft sand and the warm sunshine on your back.”
Then, she slipped her fingers into his.“And lastly, remember how my hand fit into yours.”
There was a pause. “Are you ready? On the count of three, smile and capture this moment, ok?” He grinned and nodded.
“Ok, 1.... 2....” He stole a glance at her. He immediately closed his eyes again and smiled. “....3!”
“Now, you can open your eyes again. And congratulations, you’ve got yourself a memograph.”
He couldn’t help but laugh. “A memograph? Seriously? Did you come up with it just now?”
She flashed her signature goofy smile.
“To take a good photograph, you need good lighting, focus, timing, blah blah blah. It’s easier to take a memograph. You just need to stop, feel the moment and snap! You captured the perfect moment. It’s cool, isn’t it?”
He grinned widely and agreed, “Yes, it sure is cool.” It was then that he knew. Spending the rest of his life with this woman, there never would be a boring moment.

End of Flashback

“So, there you go, my dear. That’s what a memograph is.”
With a twinkle in his eyes, he added, “Don’t forget to create beautiful memories with the people you love and take memographs. ‘Coz photographs, they can get torn, lost or misplaced. But with memographs, you keep them in here.” He pointed a wrinkled finger to his heart.
“And they will be with you, wherever you go.”
